Prevocational Services provide opportunities for individuals with limited work-related skills to learn job skills and other related social skills to enhance their ability to obtain employment in the future. Individuals learn skills such as following directions, accepting feedback and criticism from a supervisor and increasing their self confidence. Individuals are able to have paid work experiences and learn about the world of work as a result of this program. Clarification of employment goals and resources to assist individuals in reaching his/her objectives is the primary focus.
The Vocational, Experience and Training Services (VETS) offer individuals job preparation through actual paid work experience and vocational counseling. Individuals with developmental disabilities are introduced to the world of work, and are able to earn money while better defining their employment goals. The Prevocational and VETS programs are offered in each of the five boroughs of New York City.
Eligibility Criteria: Individuals with developmental disabilities are eligible for the Prevocational and VETS Programs. In order to be considered for these services, the individual will need to provide the program with documentation (medical, psychological and psychosocial) that demonstrates evidence of a developmental disability.
